Small and beautiful : how to build today
For many people, owning their own home is part of their life plan. Today’s homes are small, flexible and sustainable.
Out of the apartment, into a house in the countryside: for many people, this is still a worthwhile goal in life.

Graz-based architects Michaela Maresch and Gerald Brencic recognized this trend early on. Back in 2012, they founded Commod-Haus GmbH in the provincial capital and have been specializing in the construction of modular houses that grow with you ever since. “Nowadays, flexibility is also in demand when it comes to living. Fewer and fewer people want a large house in which they will spend 60 years of their lives,” explains Maresch.
There are not only financial reasons for this. For more and more house builders, it is important to build sustainably and keep soil sealing to a minimum. This is possible with individual Commod modular homes, including time savings during construction.
A modular house project takes around a year from planning to installation. Production itself takes just three months: “We produce all the modules from wood in one factory at a constant humidity and temperature. This means that our houses are of a very high quality,” Maresch is convinced.
How many modules are needed for a house depends on the size and individual planning ? The minimum number of square meters is 25 square meters (correction CH). There are no upper limits, depending on the building permit and planning.
It is precisely this flexibility that is the greatest advantage of modular construction: “When customers come to us, we clarify right at the start where the modular houses could potentially be extended. Young families, for example, can start by building a smaller house to save costs and then gradually expand the house as required. The same applies to dismantling,” explains Maresch.
Once the modules are ready, things move quickly:
Assembly on the plot with screw foundations takes only three to six hours. A concept that seems attractive to many.
So far, the Graz-based company has completed over 100 projects throughout Austria.
The company is currently focusing on expansion: a branch office was opened in Paris in the summer, and the company also plans to produce Commod modular houses in France (correction CH) and Germany in the future.
