Austrian pioneering company – recently awarded with two design awards in New York – opens branch in Paris

The Graz-based timber house modular pioneer COMMOD-Haus was recently honoured with two awards in New York and is now opening its first branch in Paris.

COMMOD is the European brand leader in modular architecture and individually designed wooden modular houses. The company was founded in Graz in 2011 by DI Michaela Maresch BSc and DI Gerald Brencic with the aim of offering innovative solutions for central challenges in the field of residential construction and architecture. The company currently finds itself in a strong period of growth.

“With our houses, we wanted to create a sustainable, fast, uncomplicated, high quality and design alternative to conventional construction. And this has gone so well in Austria that we are now also expanding internationally!” Michaela Maresch proudly explains.

“The French market is particularly exciting for us, as there are still no comparable providers here, but the desire for sustainable, flexible and individual forms of housing among French customers is great and architecture as a whole is highly valued,” adds Gerald Brencic.

Wooden modular construction: fast, uncomplicated, individual and ecological.

Around 80 COMMOD houses in timber frame construction have been planned, manufactured and erected in recent years. What is special about them – especially in comparison to prefabricated houses – is that each house is unique. They are as diverse as the customers who reside there. The sizes of the single-family houses start at approx. 24 m² gross floor area and go up to 250 m². But large projects and multi-storey buildings with around 900 m² are also being planned at the moment.

COMMOD-Haus takes care of everything, from the design and submission planning to the final details of the fittings. The planning and construction phase is followed by the erection in one single day. The houses, 99% of which are made of renewable raw material wood, are ready for occupancy after only about two weeks. The bathroom, kitchen, sauna, or various other pieces of furniture can be custom-made on request and are already included in the delivery.

Ecologically, wooden modular houses reflect the spirit of the times. The modules are placed on point or strip foundations and thus do not contribute to soil sealing, but can be removed without leaving any traces at the end of their life cycle. If you decide to relocate, enlarge or downsize your house, this is all possible thanks to the modular system.

Who are COMMOD houses made for?

In addition to the classic second homes in the countryside, many houses are built for singles or single parents with children. But the big family with up to 5 children is also among the customers.

“Modular construction is an attractive option, especially for people who don’t want to spend a lot of time on the construction site,” says Brencic.

“COMMOD Focus” awarded in New York

A house recently assembled in Carinthia “COMMOD Focus” has not only taken the hearts of its residents by storm, but also those of the jury of the New York “Best of Year Award 2022”. COMMOD Focus was voted into the top 5 in the “small country house” category of the renowned “Interior Design Magazine”.

“We are honoured by this internationally respected recognition of our work and it inspires us to be mentioned in the same breath as BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group and Snøhetta etc.,” says Maresch.

An ingenious floor plan paired with a spectacular location in the middle of the Mölltal have taken into account the residents’ desire to “bring the outside in”. The design of the house combines cosiness, openness and practicality with a wow effect. The modern living room window cantilevers freely out of the hillside, creating an exciting contrast with the stone tower dating from 1907 and Falkenstein Castle to the north of the property.

COMMOD Focus is – like all COMMOD houses – a modular house in timber frame construction with cellulose insulation. It has a net floor area of 102 m² and sits on cantilevered reinforced strip foundations. The unusual timber façade of the main structure is made of chopped thermo spruce. The cantilevered structure protrudes from it like a camera lens and is covered with a discreet light grey plaster façade in a rough broom finish to stand out from the ensemble.

COMMOD houses have meanwhile been honoured with the German Design Award, Architzer A+Award, BIG See Award, Iconic Award, Green Product Awards, NY Product Design Award and Best of Year Award, among others.
