COMMOD presents = stratO23.5 = – a spatial and sensory installation that explores the interplay between material, nature, and time.
Architecture is not static—it evolves through the interaction of material, nature, and time. With stratO23.5, COMMOD HOUSE brings this philosophy to life at the Venice Architecture Biennale, offering a powerful expression of sustainable building and spatial awareness. The installation sets a new standard for how architecture can respond to ecological realities while remaining emotionally and sensorially engaging.
The name brings together several layers of meaning: “strato,” the Italian word for “layer,” references the layered construction of the pavilion and the traditional pastries of Austria that inspired its form. “23.5” stands for the Earth’s axial tilt – a quiet yet powerful force that shapes our climate, seasons, and the rhythm of all life. And the “O” marks both the open center of the structure and the underlying themes of time, space, and existence that guide the design.
The pavilion is made from sustainable plywood panel and unfolds in a light, tapered form that suggests levitation. At the heart of the installation is a void – a calm, contemplative space where shadow, air, and sound invite reflection. stratO23.5 is a built gesture, a slowed-down moment in time, a piece of architecture that floats between memory and possibility.
As the light shifts and air flows through the structure, visitors experience a space that is never static – one that is alive, in motion, and in dialogue with its surroundings. This moment of stillness becomes an invitation to pause and consider the deeper layers of our existence: How do we live in time? What does it mean to be present in space? Architecture here becomes more than form – it becomes a framework for being.
stratO23.5 is both a sculptural statement and a forward-looking experiment. It shows how architecture can respond to the changing conditions of our time: by reusing resources wisely, building with care, and staying flexible in form and function.
stratO23.5 is a statement for an architecture that merges with nature, reuses materials with intention, and redefines our relationship with the environment. At the 2025 Biennale, it stands for the potential of architecture to be more than just a physical structure—acting instead as a shaping force for a conscious and sustainable future.
COMMOD HOUSE operates in Austria and France, partnering with inFABric to set new benchmarks in sustainable architecture and design. Together, we create spaces that not only respond to ecological challenges but also enhance everyday life in meaningful ways.
COMMOD GOES BIENNALE and COMES BACK
After its premiere in Venice, stratO23.5 begins its journey as a traveling installation.
Its form invites playful interaction and opens up a dynamic dialogue between architecture, space, and environment. Adaptable by design, it will be shown in a variety of settings—from the dense fabric of Venice to expansive natural landscapes—offering visitors new ways to experience architecture in changing contexts.
